Here comes winter...

Hold on a sec. Is my Google reader broken? It says that Lepps blogged but I'm pretty sure that can't be true. But wait, no! It's true. This isn't the post from May anymore! Hold. The. Phone.

It's true. We're blogging. As usual. Many apologies, but this is where we're at right now. We just don't blog as much as we used to. But I haven't resigned to never blogging again. I'm also just not taking as much photography as I used to when my camera was still a young bride. There was a honeymoon stage of about a year or more, but lately, me and my camera's relationship has grown cold. We don't even sleep in the same bed anymore, but that's mostly because Ruth said it's not normal to bring the camera to bed.

Mostly kidding. I'm still shooting now and then, and Ruth and I had a productive summer that we can share. We were recently in Salmon Arm during some beautiful weather, and I warmed up to my camera's call. ka-click!

That's our home. That's where we grew up. It was just 14 years ago when we drove out to that valley and watched those mountains burn during one of the largest fires in Canada.

We had two goals this summer. One was to get the exterior of our house painted...

......check.

For once in our lives we took a dare. We picked a rather loud color for our doors. Reviews were mixed, even on facebook. Some people loved it, some people were confused, some people said they loved it but I think they were secretly confused. We've decided that we like it and we're sticking with it. Thanks for the inspiration Elmer and Marlene ;)

The second goal was to tear down the old tin shed under the deck and have a tuff shed installed...

...check! Man-cave! With the completion of our basement, the lack of storage space was very evident. This great little shed fits our needs perfectly.

I think I felt a very noticeable boost in my testosterone levels as I stood in my shed, thick with the smell of fresh lumber and saw dust. I didn't lift a hammer to raise it, I paid someone. But it felt good to stand in it when it was done. I instantly felt the need to install a mini fridge full of beer, as if for some reason I'm not allowed to keep beer in the house. I wanted to walk out the front door of the house and shout to Ruth, "If you need me, I'll be in the shed today!". As though there are a days worth of things to do in that small 6'x12' shack.

Oh well. I'm pretty sure that the fact that I'm excited that the body and trim color of the shed, match the body and trim color of the house, pretty much negates any boost in testosterone I experienced.

We attended our friends wedding down near Tacoma this summer. They were married in a castle. It was a beautiful place for me and my camera to get re-acquainted.

And when the relationship between a man and his camera gets rocky, the camera will often pursue other mates. Like Ruth.

I can't really blame the camera.

We had a fun summer in the garden this year, and Ruth took some photos to prove it.

Gardens teach me so much about life. Patience. Responsibility. Beauty. Purpose.

Slugs!!

Slugs eat potato vines and Ruth and I love potato vines! We heard that if you put out a dish of beer, the slugs are attracted to the yeast in the beer and they fall in and drown. Well.. I think the idea is to put the beer in something they'd actually fall into. Not lean in and sip from...

That's right. That's a slug drinking beer from a dish on our porch. It drank it's fill and stumbled home. It woke up the next morning with a headache, and decided not to go out for potato vines. Yay!

This summer I went to the San Diego Comicon!

My company was showing our game in the marvel booth, which was like being on center stage. It was a ton of fun. I brought my camera along to try to rekindle things between us.

Costume made by a fan.

Another costume made by a fan. Repeat - these are fans. These are not costumes from the studio, they're purely home made (or at least home invested).

One of my favorite photos; Jedi's having latte's.

Had a celebrity sighting, and it happened to be one of my favorite celebrities :)

But this kid takes the cake! Nice costume.

That's all the update I have from the Lepp's in Bothell. One bit of excitement we had last week was that I won an international reptile photography competition. I suppose there aren't a lot of people clamoring for that title; reptile photographer - but it was exciting nonetheless.

This is the winning photo; An Australian Frilled Lizard.

But for the life of me, I don't know how that beat this one that I also submitted.

Oh well, I'm not the judge and I definitely won't complain. The prize was a new camera...

...which made my old camera jealous.

Tofino

Well, Let's start with the last photo I took while we were on vacation in Tofino.

Standing on the porch of our cabin looking out over the ocean, and the sliver moon. There is nothing quite like falling asleep to the sound of the waves rolling on the beach.

And now, the first photo of the vacation...

That's right Mom and Dad - we're going on an adventure! Our anniversary and my birthday both roll around in May. It's about the time that the sun starts popping it's head out in the North West, and Ruth and I start feeling the need to stretch our wintered bones. We honeymooned in Tofino and haven't been back since. This year we decided to return.

But this time we brought my Mom and Dad. :)

My parents know us well, and they caught on to the vibe of the trip pretty quickly. It started as most of our little excursions do; looking for the best coffee, trying the island food, and exploring the local shops.

On our way to the west coast of Vancouver Island, we stopped to take in a few local stops, like some small falls, and the old growth forests. Beautiful trails and scenery.

After some incredibly winding roads that I'd almost forgot (never drive to Tofino in the dark), we arrived at the beach :)

We love Tofino. Not much else we can say about it. I found going back this time, that I felt a deep sense of peace. I really didn't want to leave when we did, and I felt very peaceful while we were there. It really is a special place. When the tide went out, me and Ruth and Dad headed down to the beach to look for sea life!

This has to be one of my favorite photos of me and my Dad so far. Me; trying to hold in the excitement of holding cool creepy crawlies. Dad; not afraid to show excitement at all. The expression on my face; I am a serious scientist. The expression on Dad's face; I am a tourist!

We kept turning over more rocks and finding larger crabs. Ruth knew all about beach combing but it was new to me.

We also decided to take a day trip out on a boat to possibly see some wildlife, but mostly to enjoy the views, and share a meal out in the Broken Islands near Ucluelet. It was a great day.

Apparently Dad saw something astonishing!

We were in between seasons for the whales. The grey whales were headed out of the inlet and humpbacks hadn't quite arrived yet. So they told us not to expect to see anything. What we saw instead was a humpback whale breaching closer to the boat then most people ever get to see. I don't photograph whales, I don't really ever believe I'll get a shot, but one of the other tourists on the boat was a fellow shutter bug and managed to get this shot of me watching the whale just as it leapt into the air. Good reflexes!

And then later in the week, Mom went to the spa while Ruth and I went kayaking. Dad hung around on the beach and then we all went out for dinner, and watched the sun set on the surfers.

We also went on some hikes around our cabin. Such a peaceful place to be.

And when the sun went down we chilled out in our beautiful little cabin, the same style of cabin we stayed in on our honeymoon. It was great.

But after several days, it was time to head home. I spent one last evening on the beach photographing the waves before heading back to the ferry.

On the way back home we hooked up with big sis Joanne and had another great meal. It was a lot of really good meals, good scenery, and good company. We got to relax but we got to have fun too. I personally can't wait to go back. Next time we're doing storm season! :)
